Solid Waste Association of the Philippines (SWAPP) conducted Training for Establishing a Barangay Solid Waste Management Program last April 26-27, 2011 at Bayview Park Hotel in Manila.  The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 emphasizes the important role of barangays in the implementation of this law.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to comply with the solid waste management program of their respective barangays. More often than not, barangays do not include solid waste management as one of their priority programs because it is considered as cost center for the barangay. Solid waste management is usually considered or thought by many as “collection and disposal” of garbage.

This training enhance us with all the necessary information and skills with regards on organizing the BSWM Committees including their roles and functions; conducting baseline data; existing waste management options for biodegradables and recyclables wastes; establishing of Materials Recovery Facility; fund sourcing for SWM programs and of course the sharing of each barangay best practices adds also an idea and information for us to come-up of a sustainable SWM Program.
